London Docks – Hermitage Basin

Unlike the nearby St Katharine Docks, which exist in their entirety, very little remains of the original dock system for the old London Docks. The original dock was accessed from the Thames by a lock to the south – known as Wapping Entrance. That entrance was blocked up after being damage by bombing during the Second World War. During the 1980s, the whole dock was removed.

Further west, another entry lock was constructed beside the Thames which allowed shipping to enter the original dock at the SW corner via a basin. That basin remains complete and has housing built around it, dating from the 1980s – the time of the development of the London Docks by the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC).
